Hi everyone. Today I’m reviewing the Hippy Paste* natural deodorant by Earth Conscious. I’ve spoken to you guys before about the importance of swapping out your toxic deodorants for more natural and healthier options and I’ve even shown you how to make your own DIY deodorants in a previous post.
For those of you that don’t know I also partnered up with Ecohabitude (an online marketplace to buy an sell socially conscious products) and created a DIY deodorant post with them. However I know that a lot of you aren’t crazy about DIY so I’ve found a great alternative which skips out the fussy part.
Just a quick recap on the dangers of conventional deodorants like Dove and Sure. There is a strong correlation between the toxins found in conventional deodorants and breast cancer. Most of these antiperspirants and deodorants contain aluminium to prevent us from sweating and block out body odour but what is often missed out is the fact that aluminium is very harmful to our bodies. Aluminium can build up in our kidneys, brain, thyroid, liver and lungs. It is also believed to contribute towards the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Now let’s talk about the ingredients in Hippy Paste. It’s made up of organic coconut oil, organic arrowroot, organic shea butter, sodium bicarbonate (baking powder), beeswax, organic orange oil and organic lemon oil. So already it has more ingredients than the DIY deodorant that I make myself.
It’s also not tested on animals so it’s cruelty free. Also this is made in the UK. It’s really important to support local brands so this is a bonus.
Maybe it’s because there are more ingredients added to it but this is more luxurious feeling than my DIY deodorant. It feels more well… like a paste unlike the DIY deodorant which feels more like balm to oil texture. Also I am surprised that I my skin did not get irritated by this. In the past when I have added essential oils to my DIY deodorant my skin has become irritated (maybe I’m OD-ing on the essential oils).
I got my Hippy Paste in the citrus scent but it also comes in lavender, mint, pure, tropical and ylang ylang. I really want to try yang ylang next! It’s nice that I can use a scented natural deodorant and not have the essential oils burn my pits.
This deodorant works really well for me. I know some deodorants are bad at keeping body odour at bay like the Salt of the Earth Natural crystal deodorant which did nothing for me.
With the Hippy Paste, I scoop out a little and warm it up in my hands so it softens and then apply it to my underarms. I only have to use a little and it works great on me. If I’m having a long day, I might have to reapply to refresh.
There is 60g of product in the tin. I have been using it for a month and there is still more than 3/4 of the product left so it’s safe to say that this will last me a long time. A little goes a long way with this product.
Because the tin is so little it’s travel friendly. I can just pop it into my handbag and take it with me although if I am not planning on staying the night somewhere I would prefer to take a spray form deodorant.
Who wants to be rubbing paste on their pits in public?
The reason I started making my own deodorant is because most of the natural deodorants that actually work were priced rather steeply considering I was used to spending £2 on conventional deodorants and it’s something we use every day.
However Hippy Paste retails for £6 which is great considering it is an organic product and it lasts way longer than spray deodorants. I think it’s really worth the purchase and would be a great place to start if you are considering switching to a healthy deodorant which you should! If you buy 2 or more deodorants, you receive free delivery.
I just want to mention that this is not an antiperspirant and neither was the DIY deodorant. It is not healthy for our sweat to be blocked by antiperspirants. We need to be able to sweat so our body can cool down and get rid of toxins. So you may feel your pits getting sweaty but I didn’t find that I smelled.
Baking soda is great at masking any smells. You can even sprinkle a little in your sweaty gym shoes if you find that those smell a little funky.
All in all, I really enjoyed using this product. It works, it’s got great ingredients and it’s inexpensive. I prefer this over my DIY deodorant although that’s still a great option if you’ve got the ingredients at home because they both do the same thing.
However I do enjoy being able to use a scented deodorant again without having it irritate my skin. It lasts a really long time, so I won’t be needing to purchase another one any time soon. I would really recommend it for anyone who is breastfeeding or pregnant.
It’s even more important for you to use a healthy deodorant when you are caring for a baby as well. And I find that it works well on sensitive skin so I think it would be a great starting point for teenagers or kids that are just starting to use deodorants.
