Finding a high coverage long lasting foundation that’s natural is a struggle. As natural foundations don’t have a lot of the horrible nasties that conventional makeup does, this often means that won’t last all day which sometimes (let’s be honest) you need.
My lovely Dutch friend Kawsar (hey gurrrrl!) recommended the Kat Von D Lock It Foundation to me and I was taken aback by how decent the ingredients were for a mainstream foundation. It doesn’t have the cleanest ingredients but they are pretty good. Most of the ingredients score a 1-2 on EWG’s Think Dirty app which is a Low Hazard ingredient.
The foundation really is full coverage. It’s recommended to use one full pump for your entire face. And this is plenty! It covered most of my imperfections flawlessly and I really only needed a little concealer for really stubborn pigmentation or to brighten areas of my face (i.e. under the eyes, my forehead and my chin – although this is more for dimension and brightness rather than coverage).
I would definitely recommend going into store and getting colour matched before purchasing because the bottle can be quite deceiving and it’s so difficult to tell your shade online. I initially went in thinking I was a M52 Warm or M53 Warm and it turns out I was neither. I was a M57 Warm so I was pretty off LOL.
Also as it is such high coverage, you do need to be really close with your colour matching otherwise it will look like a clay veil on your face if you get the wrong shade.
What skin type is for?
I saw a lot of reviews that slam this for being too dry and targeting this at oilier skin types. I’m definitley not the oiliest of girls but having said that my skin is far from dry. I’d say I’m combination as I can get drier patches around my mouth and forehead but pretty well balanced overall. I used this and had no issues. I mixed it with a drop of oil and it gave me a nice natural satin luminous finish.
Kat Von D herself recommends using a moisturising primer underneath the foundation and I would 100% agree. I’ve used the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Primer and The Ordinary High- Spreadability Fluid Primer and they both work well.
How well did it wear?
Even after adding oil to it, the foundation lasted well on my skin for a 10-hour day. This is so ideal for weddings or special events where I need the foundation to last all day. I also tested this on hotter more humid days and it’s still lasted really well.
It did not settle in any fine lines or nooks and crannies. I often have the issue that foundation settles around my nose and smile lines but I did not have an issue with this one.
The foundation did not separate but I also think the trick to this is to use less foundation on areas like my nose and chin where I tend to see the foundation breaking up.
So it’s £27 for 30ml of foundation. I don’t know if it’s the packaging but it looks like alot more than 30ml.
However, I picked it up on sale for £22 at Debenhams.
Even at full price, in comparison to the prices for natural foundations, the price point is really reasonable. The cost of natural makeup can be essspensive.
I love this foundation! Hands down I will be using it for special events when I want to look extra flawless.
It’s a perfect staple for those of you that want to get healthier makeup, but still want the coverage and the long lasting performance. It also doesn’t break the bank.
The only downside is that the bottle can make the shade look a little different and it’s really hard to match your shade online but it’s a small price to pay for the amazing results.
I thought this would be a perfect stepping stone into natural foundations because the ingredients are pretty decent and the foundation gives you good results.
